René Gallimard (Jeremy Irons) es un funcionario de la embajada francesa en Pekín, en 1964, que no está preparado para la profunda emoción que se apodera de él cuando presencia la actuación de una hermosa diva de la Ópera de Pekín en el Madame Buterfly de Puccini. Gallimard conoce a su misteriosa musa, Song Liling (John Lone), a la que llama Butterfly, y se obsesiona con ella, siguiéndola hasta el oculto mundo de la arcana música china y de su cultura, y desembocando finalmente en una historia de amor tan apasionada que arriesga gustosamente, y rechaza más tarde, todos los demás aspectos de su vida. A la vez que su existencia, su comportamiento y su carácter se transforman, Gallimard comienza de manera inesperada a ascender en la escala diplomática. Se ha hecho patente su competencia en los temas culturales chinos y esto ha contribuido a aumentar su categoría profesional, aunque a Gallimard no le importa nada excepto el objeto de su amor. Pero esta febril fantasía no puede durar: Gallimard descubre que ha sido objeto de un fatal juego de manipulación política internacional. Y un día fatídico conoce la terrible verdad sobre Butterfly que altera todo lo que ha experimentado. Destrozado, Gallimard se refugia en sus fantasías y se aísla para siempre en sus sueños de amor exótico y etéreo, dejando a su antigua amante desolada por el indeleble significado de su pasión compartida. Notice that she has the students lay on their backs and breathe in while lifting the weight up and keeping it there. That is to try and engage the inspiratory muscles and keep them engaged the whole time they are singing. Le nozze di Figaro, ossia la folle giornata (The Marriage of Figaro, or The Day of Madness), K. 492, is an opera buffa (comic opera) composed in 1786 in four acts by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, with Italian libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte, based on a stage comedy by Pierre Beaumarchais, La folle journée, ou le Mariage de Figaro (1784).
Although the play by Beaumarchais was at first banned in Vienna because of its satire of the aristocracy, considered dangerous in the decade before the French Revolution, the opera became one of Mozart's most successful works. The overture is especially famous and is often played as a concert piece. The musical material of the overture is not used later in the work, aside from two brief phrases during the Count's part in the terzetto Cosa sento! in act 1.
